What to Sew for Men: 4 Gifts I Made My Husband for Christmas

In one of my recent YouTube videos, I said that I had made my husband several things for his Christmas stocking this year and enough people asked to see what those ideas are that I went ahead and made another video to tell you what I sewed for my husband this year!

Men can be hard to buy for and maybe even harder to sew for, but I’ve made my husband several things over the years that he’s loved and has actually asked for more of. So I’ll share those ideas with you here and then hopefully it may spark some other ideas for you if you’re stuck on what to sew for the men and boys in your life.

All four of these ideas have tutorials on my blog and/or YouTube channel! I’ve linked to all of the blog posts and video tutorials under each item. I also have more convenient printable versions of each tutorial available for a few dollars each in my pattern shop or on Etsy if you prefer to print them out so you don’t have to keep referring back to the blog posts or videos.

If you prefer watching over reading, you can watch the video below. It does have some extra tips about choosing fabrics for men and some things to avoid if you want your gifts to be well received, so that might also be helpful. But skip past it if you’d rather read instead.

4 Quick Gifts I Made My Husband for Christmas This Year

Coffee Sleeves

First up, coffee sleeves! Or cozies, or coozies, or whatever you like to call them. I’ve made my husband several of these over the past few years and he loves them. He always asks for more and whenever I come home with a new Star Wars fabric, he asks for a new coffee sleeve out of it, haha.

These reusable and washable sleeves are fashioned after the cardboard kind you get at the coffee shop. They’re not girly or quilty, so I think that’s part of why he likes them. He keeps them in his car and uses them daily. These are not meant for insulating your cup like a coffee cozy with batting would do; they’re more for keeping your hand from freezing or burning while holding your cup, just like the sleeves at the coffee shop.

To sew these sleeves, you can grab the free pattern and use the video tutorial, or you can purchase the more convenient version with printable instructions in my shop or on Etsy.

Pillow Cases

My husband loves to have fun novelty pillow cases! In fact, everyone loves these. It’s pretty much a universally loved gift idea for literally all ages, and one that most people don’t even think they want until they have one, haha. Fun fabrics are really what make this gift special and these days, you can find fabrics that fit the interests of any man in your life.

My husband especially likes Star Wars fabrics, but I’ve also made him Harry Potter and Friends pillow cases. JoAnn currently has a huge line of licensed prints based on all kinds of TV shows, movies and comis, but they also have sports teams fabrics too. If your husband is into music, golf, camping, whatever, you can find a fun fabric!

You can grab the printable version of this project in my shop or on Etsy, or you can follow the video tutorial. My method has been perfected over years of making dozens of pillow cases as gifts, and I’ve written the tutorial for what I believe is the easiest and most efficient way.

Oversized Hot Pad

This hot pad is something my husband specifically asked for. He has a small microwave in his office and wanted a 12” x 12” hot pad to keep next to it. Since my oversized hot pad tutorial is my most popular pattern, video, and blog post, I think it’s safe to say, this is a good idea for pretty much anyone!

Once again, the power lies in the fabric choice. I used a Star Wars print (of course — are you sensing a theme?), but just like the pillow case, hunt for those fabrics you own husband will love. Of course, your husband might not use his for his office, but anyone who uses the kitchen or cooks at all will like one of these!

You can purchase the printable version in my shop or on Etsy, or follow the video tutorial to make your own.

Game Piece Bag

This is something I designed very recently just because my husband wanted one. We play a board game called Talisman (it’s sooooo fun!!) that has several expansions. He got an expansion for his birthday that came with tokens and we needed a bag for them that could be easily passed around, while not easily spilling.

He loves this little drawstring pouch I designed for the tokens and said it’s just perfect. This kind of pouch is useful for all kinds of games — for D&D dice, Scrabble tiles, etc …

You can of course use this bag in many ways, not just for game pieces, so even if your husband doesn’t play board games, don’t discount this bag idea. Travel accessories like toiletries or charging cables are a perfect use as well.

You can purchase the printable version of this tutorial in my shop or on Etsy, or you can watch the video tutorial to make some drawstring bags.

That’s it! Those are the four things I made my husband for Christmas this year, but those aren’t the only things I’ve ever made him. Many people left comments over on the YouTube video with more ideas for sewing for men, so those are worth a read too!

I hope this has given you some tips and ideas for things to sew for the men in your life. And if you have even more ideas, let us know in the comments!

Cheers,

Nikki
