10 Sewing Patterns for Mother's Day Gifts
Mother’s Day is next weekend and there is plenty of time to sew a gift for the special ladies in your life! I’ve complied these 10 patterns as great gifts to sew up for Mother’s Day because these are all things I have actually sewn for my mom and/or my mother-in-law.
Oversized Hot Pads
First up, because this is what I just finished making another one of for my mother-in-law, is the oversized hot pad pattern. This has been one of my most popular tutorials, for good reason! It’s the kitchen item no one knows they’re missing until they have one. My mother-in-law has one and used it both as a casserole dish hot pad and as a place to air dry her dishes! She lives alone, so handwashing a few dishes at a time does the job for her. She asked me for another large hot pad for this reason, so I made her one. Find the video tutorial here and the pattern here or on Etsy.

Quilted Pot Holders
I made some round hot pads a few years ago and gave one to my mom. It’s so fun to see her using it in her kitchen. This project is so fun to play around with since you can get creative with some orphan quilt blocks if you want! And quilting a round object is actually easier than binding things with corners. Coasters

Tea Towels
This is a project I made specifically for Mother’s Day a few years ago and I’m proud to say these tea towels are still in use (including the ones I made myself). Not only do these have a cute ruffle, but they’re double sided so they actually absorb water, unlike most of the novelty tea towels I’ve had from stores. Watch the video tutorial here and get the pattern here or on Etsy.

Tote Bags
One year I made my mom, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law all a tote bag with a very cool fabric panel I had with hymn lyrics on it. I’ve spotted those bags in use over the years and I’ve made many others as gifts. This basic lined tote bag pattern is super versatile and is a great use for panels or quilt blocks. Book Sleeves
This is a very popular gift idea! If your mom is a reader, she’ll love to have a book sleeve. I like mine because I’m constantly tossing a book in my tote or my purse and a sleeve protects the book and keeps my bookmark in place. The small size fits my Kindle and the large will fit a Bible or iPad (depending on the model), so it’s multi use. If you can’t decide on a size, go with the medium one, as it fits most regular books. Watch the video tutorial here and get the pattern here or on Etsy.

Sunglasses Case
I batched sewed a bunch of these last year and gave one to my mother-in-law when she was here last. They’re so fun! And great scrap busters. I keep one in my car and one in my bathroom drawer for my actual glasses. Plus, my daughters and I have discovered, they’re also great for tampons or pens, ha! Bowl Covers
I like to use these bowl covers to cover certain bowls in the fridge and to bring food to potlucks at church. Especially at potluck, it’s hard to keep my piece of saran wrap in tact, so this solves that problem! And if your loved one has a Kitchenaid or other mixer with a bowl on the counter, this is a great dust cover for that too. My easy method is less fussy than most similar patterns, and they’re reversible too, so you get to pick extra fun fabrics :) Watch the video tutorial here and get the pattern here or on Etsy.

Mason Jar Cozies
I’m not going to lie, this is one of my favorite projects ever. You can gift these with a mason jar in SO many ways and I talk about all the ways in the YouTube video. But for Mother’s Day, gifting some flowers in a jar with an insulated cozy that Mom can later use to keep her drinks cold and her hand dry, would be perfection. Watch the video tutorial here and get the pattern here or on Etsy. (There is also a can cozy version of this pattern, so if your mom drinks soda or sparkling water, that’s a good gift too.)
