6 Things to Sew for Fall

Doesn’t Fall just give you all the cozy sewing feels? It does me. It seems like Fall is the time of year when the homey hobbies like sewing and knitting get their time to shine. But, it’s also the time of year when life starts to get busy, so you may not have time to sew a Fall themed quilt or hand make your entire Fall wardrobe.

No worries, though! Here are six things you can sew that will put you in the Fall spirit, get you ready for the season to come, and add some cozy vibes to your home. Some of these are some fun, but classy decor ideas, some are for your kitchen, and a few can double as gifts that you can batch sew, so you’re ready with those hostess gifts and holiday exchanges.

Let’s “Fall” right into it! (Not sorry).

6 Things to Sew For Fall

If you’re a video person, I recorded these ideas in a video for you! And you’re more of a reader, skip the video and read the ideas below instead.

Aprons

If you’ve seen my video tutorial for the Everyday Apron, you might remember how I said that my mom, during my first year of marriage, made me an apron for every season. She’d buy holiday fabrics for each holiday and sew me up a new apron and send it to me, and it was so fun and special for me! I still love the idea of having seasonal aprons, at least for Fall and Christmas, which seem to be seasons where we do a lot of cooking.

So, get yourself some Fall fabric that you love and sew up on apron for your Fall cooking and baking and on into Thanksgiving! There are such fun novelty fabrics for each season, so good luck choosing just one ;)

Watch my tutorial for easy aprons and/or purchase the printable version from my shop!

Pumpkins

There are so many great tutorials out there for sewing fabric pumpkins and I’ve used a few myself and also received some as gifts. Fabric pumpkins that blend in with your home decor are always a great addition to your home in the Fall. They’re festive without being cutesy or kitschy and they can take you all the way through Thanksgiving, unlike certain decorations that are just for Halloween.

You can find tutorials for all sizes and kinds of pumpkins. One of my recent videos is for these cute little pumpkins that I strung up into a garland of sorts. I LOVE this little decoration! Having recently moved here and now renovating our house, my bin of holiday decor just hasn’t been accessible this season, so having this little Fall decoration is really bringing me joy and making our house feel like home, which can take time when you’ve just moved.

You can get the printable version of this pumpkin tutorial in my shop.

Garlands

Garlands are always so fun to craft and they can add so much to your home too. I have a free tutorial right here for a no sew garland for the Fall. I picked up some acorn caps while on a walk with friends and then I made mini pom moms to glue into them. I strung them up on my mantle.

I also mentioned above how I used my little pumpkins as fun Fall decor by string them together as a different sort of garland. I hang these vertical style of garlands from either curtain rods or door posts or something. They store much easier than the acorn garland I made, which tends to get tangled up in storage.

Pillow covers

Sewing slipcovers for your existing throw pillows in your house is such an easy way to decorate seasonally. I have some cool Christmas pillow covers that I made out of vintage Christmas prints I had. It was a great way to use those small amounts of fabrics that I love, and the great part about making covers instead of just making new pillows that you’ll only use for the season, is that you can take them off and store them and they take up so little space in your bin or closet, or wherever you store your seasonal decor. Actual pillows would just be too big for me to store, but I make these covers with an envelope back so that I can slip them on and off.

If you don’t already have throw pillows you want to cover, you can also just buy some nice pillow forms and then make covers for them throughout the year to add some seasonality.

Mini Quilt

You know i love mini quilts so much. I love the idea of having a big quilt to pull out for each season, and maybe someday I will have that. I do have a Christmas quilt and it’s my favorite and by far our coziest quilt I’ve made, so we all love that, but for now, mini quilts for the season will have to suffice. They scratch the itch to quilt and to make something creative and scrappy. I have an autumn leaf mini quilt I’ve made for Fall (it’s a free pattern here!) and I also have a Halloween one I made one year that’s fun to pull out in October. A quick search on Pinterest for Fall mini quilt patterns will land you loads of great options!

Anything for the kitchen

Ok, this one is kind of cheating, I know, but the kitchen is such a hub of activity starting in the Fall, that it always makes me want to spruce up my kitchen items like potholders, aprons, tea towels, and other kitchen things. I have a library of tutorials and patterns for these kinds of projects, including some cool pot holder hand mitts and my most watched Youtube tutorial ever, the oversized hot pad. You can even sew up a batch of these to give as gifts this Christmas. Or bring them as hostess gifts throughout the season.

I really hope this has inspired you to get into the sewing room and sew some things for Fall! The holidays are coming so soon and if you’re making gifts this year, there are many great ideas in my pattern shop so you can get started. My patterns are beginner friendly and I’m always happy to give extra help when you need it :)

Cheers and Happy Sewing!
