Easy Wonky Star Quilt Block Tutorial

I’m a huge fan of freestyle quilting! I love to improvise and pull out scraps and make a big mess and just sort of wing it. Give me a list of 100 shapes to cut before I can even start my quilt and I’m out, haha. But give me freedom to make something up as I go along, and call it wonky? I’m so in!

This wonky star block is something I sat down to practice recently because I had a ton of fun novelty Christmas fabrics (I cannot help buying them!) and I really wanted a way to use a few of them before the season is over.

So, I quickly learned to make wonky stars with a cute Christmas print in the center of each one. Then I turned them into a few little mini quilts for Christmastime! Of course, these wonky stars can be made using nonseasonal fabrics too, so this is certainly not a Christmas specific project unless you want it to be.

I added my own little techniques to make this improv quilt block even easier and removes some of the guesswork that typically comes with wonky quilting territory. And of course, I made a video tutorial so you can learn how make these easy wonky star blocks too.

Enjoy!

Okay, but now that you’ve made some wonky stars, what can you do with them?? Don’t worry, I’ve got you. Here are some ideas:

Of course, you can make a bunch of these stars and turn them into a large quilt. But if you’re like me and don’t really have time for that right now, you can turn your block into a mini quilt like I did with my Christmas stars. If you need a tutorial for that, check out my coaster tutorial, or my oversized hot pad tutorial. Both of those will show you exactly how to layer, quilt, and bind (by machine!) your mini quilt.

If you need more ideas, I have written a blog post with a huge list of projects that are perfect for solo quilt blocks. These are all small quilt projects, making them perfect for those times when you just want to quilt something small.

And if you are now super into improv quilting like me, check out my post all about that and learn why I love it and how you can get started.

As for my wonky stars, I kept one for my own house and sent the penguin one from the video to my aunt. As soon as I chose that fabric, I knew I’d send it to her! Love it when that happens.

Cheers and Happy Sewing :)
