10 Quilt Block of the Month Clubs You Can Join for 2023

For the last two years, I’ve written a post here with ten great quilt block of the month clubs you can join for the following year. I try to squeeze this post in between Christmas and New Years so you have some time to get ready! These posts continue to be among my most popular each year that I’ve written them, so I wanted to make sure I round up the best BOM quilt options for 2023!

If you’re unfamiliar with what a Block of the Month club is, it’s a fun, usually year long challenge where a quilt designer will issue one quilt block pattern each month so that at the end of the year, you have a quilt to put together! The surprise element is the part that I think is so fun and when I participated in the past, I loved opening that post on the 1st of every month with the new month’s block reveal. AND, even more fun is following the quilt-a-long on Instagram and seeing what others are making. It’s always crazy how fabrics and color choices can change a design so completely.

Some of these Block of the Month clubs are free and some you can pay to join. I made sure there’s a healthy dose of both so you can choose, and the options are of varying skill levels so there’s something for everyone. If you’re new to quilting, don’t be afraid to start a BOM club! What better way to learn several block styles than to sew the blocks along with others, in a one-block-at-a-time format? If you are new, read this post on 3 essential tools for quilting so you’ll have everything you need to get started.

Without further ado, here are the best block of the month quilt clubs to join this year!

10 Quilt Block of the Month Clubs for 2023

  1. Riley Black Designs is back this year with a new quilt block challenge. This is the one I used to make a quilt in 2021 and I highly recommend it! This BOM club is FREE and is on a bit shorter of a timeline, with patterns for each block being released weekly and lasting through May — a great option for those who like their projects to move along a little faster. The blocks are designed by different quilters, which adds something special, I think! Read all about the new 2023 quilt block challenge here.

  2. A Quilting Life is designing a mystery block of the month again this year and will be releasing the new block with video walkthroughs on the first Monday of each month. I know videos can be so helpful, especially to those new to sewing or quilting. Click here to read up on this one and to see what fabrics she recommends. This one is also FREE.

  3. I’m always eager to see what block of the month quilt Whole Circle Studio comes up with each year. This year’s Shoreline Shells is gorgeous! The price for this includes paper piecing instructions and complete sew alongs for each block.

  4. The Fat Quarter Shop can always be trusted to create top notch products and projects for quilters. You can join 2023’s Designer Mystery Block of the Month club and in this case, you are sent a box of fabrics and instructions each month! This is a great option if you love receiving fabric in the mail (duh, who doesn’t?) and for those who may not have a large quilting fabric stash already.

  5. You know how I love Annie’s Kit Clubs! You can purchase a Quilt Club subscription from Annie’s and by the end of the year have a beautiful completed quilt. Each month you’ll receive everything you need to make the proper quilt block and the final box will include finishing instructions.

  6. Sarah Fielke designs the most beautiful heirloom BOM quilts each year and 2023’s offering, The Secret Garden is no exception. Join up and receive 12 months of video tutorials and patterns for this stunning, hand appliqued quilt project. Check it out here.

  7. No one loves a murder mystery like I do (seriously, I’m an Agatha Christie super fan), so this is the quilt club I’m very tempted to join for 2023! Every year, this murder mystery quilt club lets you solve a mystery while sewing a quilt, one block per month. It looks SO FUN and it super affordable (less than a streaming service and way more fun, I’m sure.)

  8. Amy Friend has done it again! Her designs are always my favorite when compiling these posts and this year’s Farm to Table definitely blows me away once again. So different and fun!

  9. Another FREE option, Barbara Brackman of Civil War Quilts is gearing up for a 2023 block of the month series. She’s a pro at these by now and publishes each month’s pattern on her blog along with quilt related historical stories and photos. I’ve been following her blog for a long time, it’s a very unique slice of the Internet, I just love it and learn so much.

  10. For more go-at-your-own-pace options, don’t forget about Etsy! You can find all kinds of great block of the month quilt patterns there. I particularly love this Tiny Town 9 month quilt pattern. This one is a paper pattern for those who like to have patterns in their hands and not on their screens. A quick search on Etsy for quilt block of the month patterns will certainly help you find something you want to make if you don’t want the pressure of keeping up with these other challenges, or the monthly cost.

I hope you’re inspired to quilt in 2023! The quilting side of this website is one category I’ve committed to beefing up this year, so follow along here and on YouTube as I post more quilt tutorials and low pressure quilting content.

Cheers and Happy New Year!
