My Favorite T-Shirt Sewing Patterns

Yesterday I promised I’d share some great t-shirt sewing patterns with you all! T-shirt sewing is fun and easy, but finding a perfect pattern can be so hard. It’s funny that the most basic garments are hardest to find the perfect patterns for. I have some tried and true options, though, so I’m here to show you what I think are some of the best t-shirt patterns.

If you haven’t seen my newest video tutorial, you can see how I make a t-shirt using a store bought one to make a pattern. But, you may not have a t-shirt to cut up for that purpose, so I wanted to list the tee patterns I’ve had success with over and over again. Once you have a pattern, you can use the techniques and tips in that video and in my fail proof neckband tutorial, to make a closet full of favorite t-shirts.

4 Great T-Shirt Sewing Patterns

Let’s get to it!

  1. The Seamwork Astoria

My first pick has to be the Seamwork Astoria because I’ve made it more times than I can count. The pattern is for long or 3/4 sleeves, but I’ve shortened the sleeves for most of my iterations. There are several things I love about this pattern!

  • Its cropped design makes it easy to layer over dresses and wear with high waisted pants and skirts. I’ve often layered them over Ogden camis too. The long sleeved versions are great for layering over Summer dresses in the Winter.

  • It takes very little fabric! I’ve squeezed an Astoria tee out of a men’s t-shirt and out of remnants of knit fabrics left over from other projects. It’s a great scrap buster!

  • No hem necessary. The bottom band makes it so that you don’t have to hem this shirt, and since the hemming of knits can be where some sewists run into problems, this is a great beginner pattern.

2. The FREE Closet Core T- Shirt Pattern

I’ve only made this pattern once so far because it was just released a few months ago, but it’s a winner! I can’t tell you how many tee patterns I’ve tried that I was hoping would have this fit and just didn’t come through. This pattern is perfect and can be customized in tons of ways. I’m looking forward to making more. And it’s FREE, so you have nothing to lose by trying it!

3. New Look 6564

I love this tee because it’s fitted and basic! It’s different than the other patterns I have, so it suits a specific purpose in my wardrobe. I like the scoop neck and defined waistline of this tee. I’ve made it a few times and it became one on my go-tos immediately. This pattern appears to be out of print, but is still easy to find on Amazon, Etsy, and elsewhere.

Last, but not least …

4. New Look 6644

Even though this is a long sleeved pattern that some wouldn’t call a “t-shirt”, I had to include it because I’ve literally made it so many times, I’ve lost count. For a cooler weather knit top, this is the pattern I reach for every time. It can be layered over other things and it can be made with tons of different fabrics. I’ve altered the V-neck to be rounded for some versions, I’ve added sleeve cuffs for others. I could even make it longer and hem it normally if I wanted a truer t-shirt look. It’s a fantastic pattern!

There you have it! My favorite t-shirt sewing patterns. Don’t forget to watch my t-shirt sewing video for all my best tips if you’re intimidated to sew your own tees.

Cheers :)
