A New Pattern! Creative Chats Volume 5
Pattern of the Week! (It’s a new one :)
It was easy to pick a Pattern of the Week today because I added a new pattern to my shop!
I first made a birthday banner when my kids were little and we’ve hung it up for every birthday since. When Natalie got engaged, she asked for one of her own and I thought it was about darn time I make a pattern for this.
It’s of course not just for birthdays. Fabric banners make the best baby gifts too! I made one for my great nephew Elliot and it’s so cute too.
A New Dress
I finished a dress last week and then the weather turned cold again, so I didn’t get to wear it to church. Rude. But it turned out so great! On Instagram, I made some stories about my short waist adjustment and had lots of messages from people about how helpful that was, so I saved it as a highlight under my profile. If you have pooling fabric around the middle in your clothes, you might want to watch it!
I used McCall’s 7084 for this and a rayon challis from Califabrics. I did add gathered sections to the front and back skirt pieces, just because I wanted a more flowy design.
Quilt Progress
I also made progress this weekend on my block of the month club. I knew when I started that the curvy blocks would be my least favorite. The reason I learned to do wonky curves is because regular curves, with templates, are just so fussy! But, after the first few, I found if I snipped the seam allowance of the inner curve in four places, they sewed together much more easily. I am really liking the fabrics I’m using, but I think I’m just being reminded of why I prefer quilting without patterns, LOL.
This week, I fully intend to work mostly on Layla’s quilt and expand the idea around those butterflies, so I’m looking forward to that.
Making History!
As you know, we discontinued the Making History Podcast, but I promised to have a segment here in the newsletter for the interesting craft history tidbits I find! This week I stumbled on an article about the origins of the Cabbage Patch Doll. As a child of the 80’s, I remember the Cabbage Patch craze, and I had a few (I rescued mine from the thrift store — I literally cried seeing them there, I was so tenderhearted).
The original Cabbage Patch doll designer was from Kentucky and went to art school here in Louisville, where I live! Her designs were STOLEN by the guy who eventually made a fortune off them, and not just her doll design, but the concept of the adoption papers and personality traits she made to go with each doll. She got enough of a settlement in the end to send her kids to college, so good for her. Anyway, read the article here, or there’s a great video about it too.
That’s all I got for today!
Cheers,
Nikki
