Volume 6: Meet me in Louisville!
Quilter’s Day Out
I am so excited to tell you that I have been invited to be this year’s featured quilter at a local quilt convention here in the Louisville, KY area! I will be there with some of my quilts, available all day for meeting people, and giving a talk about improv quilting, including a Q&A time. If you live in the area and would like to see me there, you can find more information here.
The main reason I wanted to say yes to this invitation was because there are so many of you that I know live in my area and I’ve long wanted to plan some sort of meet up. So this is such a fun opportunity!
Pattern of the Week
I chose an all time PIn Cut Sew bestseller to put on sale this week. Sometimes I make a video and pattern for something and I think it may be too out there to perform well, and this was one of those patterns. But my doubts were unfounded this time because this video went wild! SO MANY of you have made these little strings of chickens and it makes me happy every time you tag me in the photos. If you haven’t made them yet, now’s your chance to get the pattern for 15% off! Go here and watch the video if you want too also.
Learn to make these cute fabric chickens, also known as Prosperity Hens, with this beginner friendly PDF sewing pattern.
Prosperity hens originated in India long ago, when owning a flock of chickens could have meant the difference between prosperity and need. Ladies started sewing their own little flocks, hanging them in doorways to invite wealth into their homes.
Weekend sewing
I found myself wanting to sew a little bit of everything this week. I worked quite a bit on my butterfly quilt over the weekend and I think I have some direction now! I started experimenting with improv flowers and it’s been a ton of fun. I will be filming a video soon to teach you how to make the flowers and to tell you what I’m thinking for this quilt design at that point.
Yesterday I saw some cute pictures of some sheep and decided on a whim to make a sheep doll. Sometimes I get the prototype right on the first try and I think this is one of those times, so expect this pattern pretty soon, and in plenty of time for Easter sewing.
I posted a video yesterday about my favorite quilting and sewing books! I prefer books that inspire my own ideas, rather than have only patterns (although I’ve made some beautiful quilts from books). The comments on the video have a lot more great suggestions for books, so take a loot at those! And please share your favorite books with me too, I’d love more recommendations .
Wedding Planning!
Thank you so much for sharing our excitement over Natalie’s engagement! Yesterday was her birthday and we went to an antique mall to start collecting doilies and hankies and things for the cottage core wedding decor they’re going for. Such a fun time.
Also, she asked me to make her a dress to wear for their engagement photos and also her bridal shower or the rehearsal dinner, or other wedding related things. She looked through my patterns and picked three to combine, of course. I used to make my mom do things like that too, so this is my comeuppance.
She likes the basque shaped bodice on the 80’s pattern, but the long sleeves of the 70’s one, and the ruffled skirt on the modern one. (Crazy that these are all McCall’s patterns spanning the decades). We have some fabric ordered and I’m excited to get started! Of course the two vintage patterns are quite a bit too big for her, so I may regret this in the end, but hopefully I can figure out the scaling and it’ll all be great.
Porch Geese
I have asked for a porch goose for Mother’s Day. If I don’t get one for Mother’s Day, I will just buy myself one because I already ordered some porch goose clothing patterns in anticipation of my porch goose. This goose is about to become my whole personality. I will probably be unsatisfied with the patterns’ limitations and design some goose clothes patterns for my own shop. I think we also need porch goose paper dolls. I told you, I’m in deep HAHA.
That’s all for now! Please share you porch goose pictures with me if you have one so I can ooh and aah over them while I patiently wait for my own.
Until next time,
Happy Sewing!
Nikki
