Labels for Your Sewing Projects

To my shame, after 30 years of sewing, I just added my first label to a gift I made and now I’m obsessed with all the labels for all the handmade things! There are soooo many cute ones out there! So I thought I’d round some up here and hopefully inspire you to start using them too. Because why wouldn’t you? ;)

The project I used my first label on was a Costa Tote I made as a gift. This is a free pattern from Helen’s Closet and it’s a great one! My favorite tote bag currently. I’ve been wanting to buy some labels for awhile now, so I went to Hobby Lobby after finishing and bought some. I couldn’t decide so I bought three different packages (they were very inexpensive).

All of these are from the Sew-Ology line of projects at Hobby Lobby. The larger ones are iron on and the smaller, leather-look ones are sew on. I haven’t used them yet, but when I do, I think I’ll apply them by tacking the short ends. Hobby Lobby also has sew in labels for quilting, knitting and crochet, plus metal or leather labels that would be cool for any handmade project. I also love these for clothing.

There are lots of other great labels I’ve spotted around the web lately also! My absolute favorites are these “You can’t buy this” labels. So clever, they’re on my wish list!

Of course, Amazon has a TON of choices. Here are my top favorites (links below):

  1. Handmade with love. Can’t go wrong with basic! These come in three colors and are a great price for 50 labels.

  2. PU Leather embossed labels. Several designs in one package for variety, very fun!

  3. Wooden “Handmade” button tags.

  4. Hand made” cotton labels. I love the simple color and font of these.

  5. For the sarcastic sewist, these are so funny! I especially love the “this took forever label.”

  6. Label Weavers will make personalized labels just for you!

Do you add labels to your handmade projects? I sometimes add a quick tag of a ribbon scrap in garments in order to tell which is the back, but I think I’m going to change my practice and put a tag in everything. It would be fun to have some with my Pin Cut Sew logo on it! And I think having a collection of various styles on hand for gifts is a great idea too.

Cheers!
