80’s Dress Patterns
In my last newsletter, I shared a sneak peek of the dress I’m making for Natalie out of an 80’s pattern. Yesterday I posted a YouTube video in which I was working on that dress and it was so fun to receive a bunch of comments from others who either have that pattern, or made it in the 80’s! One person said her prom dress in 1982 was with that pattern and another said it was used for a wedding she was in and each bridesmaid wore that pattern in a different color!
I would absolutely love to see photos of y’all in your 80’s pattern creations, I think that would be so fun, especially since those styles are coming back a little bit (though maybe not quite so poufy, haha). So if you have a picture, email me back and send it to me!
We are taking engagement photos this weekend, so I’ll have a better photo of the finished dress next week, but here’s a quick peek of how it turned out. I did remove quite a bit of volume from the sleeves, raised the waistline and toned down the fullness of the skirt by a lot.
Easter Dress
I haven’t made myself and Easter dress in several years, it seems, but this year I had just the right fabric and found the time. I was excited to get my hands on a pattern I remember loving many years ago and regretted getting rid of. It’s Simplicity 2588, one of the old Project Runway patterns and I just remembered it fitting me so nicely, so I found a new copy on Etsy.
For fun, I scrounged up one of the photos from when I made this a super long time ago! I made it another time with sleeves, but that photo has gone missing from my old blog, sad. But this is me in 2012.
And here’s my newest version, using a beautiful rayon challis from CaliFabrics.
Looking at the above photo makes me think I want to paint our walls this summer. I almost did it when we moved in, but decided to hold off, since it had been freshly painted when we bought it and I didn’t dislike the color enough to do it right then. But I think I want to lighten it up now that I’m in a better headspace and not in the middle of moving!
Quilt Progress
I managed to create a cute improv lady bug for the next part of Layla’s quilt! I have many more to make, but I think I have the method figured out, so they shouldn’t take too long. I’m hoping to film a video about them in the next couple weeks.
Knoxville
Last weekend, my husband and I went to Knoxville to meet up with some old friends and had a great time. We stayed downtown and the park across from our hotel had a very cool quilty installation. I couldn’t find any info about it, but it was pretty neat.
Closet Core Thrift Flip Challenge
If you need something fun and lighthearted to watch on YouTube, Closet Core Patterns posted a very fun and funny thrift flip challenge on their channel and I really enjoyed it. Here’s part one and part two.
On Writing
Awhile back I told you I was toying with writing a novel and I have started one. Writing is so fun and also so hard! I’m finding ways to practice, though. It’s funny how trying to learn fiction writing has made me a more aware reader. Why didn’t I ever pay attention to voice and dialog and character development and things like that before now? I suppose a sign of a good author is when you don’t actively notice what they’re showing you when it comes to those things. Anyway, it’s in my five year plan to be a published author, so I’m going to plug away and learn how to be good at it!
I’ll leave you with a few favorite photos I took in Knoxville and I hope you have a fantastic week!
Cheers,
Nikki
