Volume 8: When Hobbies Collide

Print Sale

I’ve said before that I’ve been taking art classes for a little over a year and so naturally, my art gets applied to my sewing hobby and I end up with fun sewing themed art prints to sell in my shop :) So this week, instead of a pattern of the week, I picked a whole category! All three of my art prints are on sale this week, including this new one.

In my collage era

I’ve started playing around with some collage art and am having so much fun! When my sister and I were kids, one of our favorite things to do was cut up magazines and make collages. My mom gave us each a binder full of paper to keep them in. it’s been fun to get back in to it.

First I painted some watercolor swatches and cut them up to make this sewing machine! It turned out SO cute. I scanned it and ordered postcards to include with sticker orders.

THEN, I scanned the cover art of some of my vintage patterns and went to town with some magazines my mom gave me. SO FUN. Should I turn these in to prints, or maybe cards? A set of 4 cards would be so fun. If you have any vintage patterns to offload, I will pay — especially now that I have an extra use for them haha, so email me back if you have any you don’t want!

Natalie’s Dress

And speaking of vintage patterns, Natalie picked this wild 80’s pattern for a dress for me to make her. She wanted a very girly dress in a very specific print, to wear for their engagement photos and other wedding related events. You’ll see more in an upcoming YouTube video, but it’s turning out so good so far. We toned down the sleeves by a LOT, haha, and shortened the bodice. She really wanted a green French country print like this and we couldn’t find it! But I was able to find it in a Laura Ashley sheet set, which was absolutely perfect. Can’t wait to show it to you when it’s done.

Quilt Progress

Today I posted a video on YouTube with the progress I’ve made on Layla’s garden quilt! It includes a tutorial for two kinds of improv flowers and the curvy stems and leaves. I’ve made even more progress since then, but you’ll have to wait until next week’s video to see! I’m excited to tackle the rows of ladybugs next.

Instagram

I mentioned in my last newsletter that I took Instagram off of my phone and wanted to update you on how it’s going. It’s been over a week now and there have been so many benefits, other than the obvious ones. I do feel like I got so much headspace back, but that was expected, as was being more focused and less antsy. But I also feel much less snarky and cynical in general, which was a surprise. I’ve also gotten back to filling little pockets of time with putzing around my house, beautifying little corners, and completing little things that I used to never get to. And now I feel delighted when I get a text or phone call, which used to feel more annoying because it was one more thing vying for my attention.

Anyway, if you’ve been wanting to try getting off the scrolling train, I highly encourage it. I do still have Instagram and Facebook on my laptop, so I can get on there and pop a picture up, but I am not at all tempted to push that home button and start scrolling, not even a little bit. I feel changed and I know that sounds super dramatic, but it’s true! Wish I would have done it a long time ago.

I did indeed subscribe to some print magazines. And I’ve gotten more reading time in too, especially during breakfast and lunch when I used to scroll on my phone. Layla and I went to a used book sale and I picked all these up for $1 each! I do love both classics and mysteries, so if you have any to recommend, please do!

Cheers and Happy Sewing!
