This baby hat tutorial is a totally beginner-friendly project! Because my baby bib video tutorial is one of my most popular on YouTube, I wanted to add some more baby sewing projects to my library of patterns. They’re so cute and seriously super easy to make. So next time you’re invited to a baby shower, sew a few baby hats! You could add some bibs, a blanket, and some burp cloths to go with it too. You can buy all four in my Sew for Baby pattern bundle here.

I’ll post the video first and underneath that, you can download the printable pattern pieces, which you’ll need print out before you get started, OR you can hop over to purchase the PDF version, which comes with the pattern pieces and step by step written instructions with photos.

Fabric and Supplies:

For baby hats, you need 1/2 yard of a stretch jersey knit fabric. Something with cotton is usually best, and don’t choose something too drapy. Of course, you can use soft t-shirts or other clothing too, like I did in the hat below! For this version, I folded the bottom edge of my pattern piece up on the fold line and used the tshirt’s hem as the bottom edge of the hat, being sure to include the cute tag.

Here are some great fabrics that would work perfectly for this project:

Tips for Sewing with Knit Fabrics

  • When sewing seams on stretchy fabrics, use either a stretch stitch (it looks like a little lightning bolt, or two rows of straight stitches, 1/8" apart. A serger is also an option. Any of these will allow for stretching without popping stitches.

  • Using the correct needle will help avoid problems like skipped stitches. Choose a stretch needle, sometimes called a ball point needle.

  • Lastly, a walking foot attachment for your machine can by helpful when sewing knit fabrics, especially if you have problems with the fabric bunching or shifting.
