10 Sewing Tools on My Christmas Wishlist This Year

Christmas is coming like a freight train! It feels that way to me every year, but this year, since we’re being encouraged to shop earlier than usual, I feel like we’re breezing past the Fall holidays and going straight into Christmas.

Like many married couples, our custom is to give each other a wishlist, making it easy to buy what the other wants. My wishlist lives on Amazon and it’s called Nikki’s Christmas wishes (can’t make it much easier than that.) I update this list each year around this time and I’m always excited to see which things he chooses! Of course, he always adds a few surprises, which is fun too.

Looking at my sewing room, you may wonder how there could possibly be any sewing tools I’m lacking, but I promise, there are plenty, haha! I’ve spent some time this past week adding some things to the list and I’m going to share with you the ten sewing gadgets I put on my Christmas list this year. So if you’re shopping for a sewing enthusiast and don’t know what to get them, or if you’re wondering what cool sewing tools to ask for yourself, hopefully this post will help you out. A gift guide for sewers, if you will. These are all totally different tools than I included in last year’s Stocking Stuffers for Sewists post, so be sure and check that one out too if you need even more ideas!

10 Sewing Tools I’m Wishing for This Christmas

A Dress Form

I’m a little surprised I don’t already have one of these! I’ve honestly needed one for years. The ballet costume I made my daughter last month was the final straw, though, so I told my husband I would really like this for my November birthday or Christmas. I picked the Dritz Sew You Adjustable Dress Form because the price is right, Dritz is a reputable brand, I like the color, and it adjusts easily so that I can change it to fit myself or my daughters. I also like that I’ll be able to use the hem marking feature on bias cut hems or on projects like the prom dress makeover from last Spring!

Ruler Masking Tape

This one’s a little weird, but I use this stuff all the time! I just ran out and I miss having it, so I put a new roll in my wishlist. You may have seen me using this tape in some of my YouTube videos, where I use it to mark lines for quilting. I like marking lines with masking tape because I haven’t found a marking tool that doesn’t leave permanent stains on my fabric. With tape, though, I can stick it across my project, sew alongside it, and remove it when I’m done.

The fact that the Scotch brand Ruler Measuring Tape is an accurate ruler is not only cute icing on the cake, it’s a useful feature when sewing or creating patterns for my shop!

Sewing Machine Feet

Having obtained my sewing machines secondhand, I don’t actually have very many feet for them. They’re both Pfaffs, so they have a built in walking foot. I’ve researched some feet that work with my machines and I’m excited to try some of them out! All of these I’m about to link should work with any sewing machine with the snap on feet. These sewing machine feet are at the top of my list:

Diagonal Seam Tape

I saw a quilter using this diagonal seam tape on Instagram and got pretty excited about it because it would be so handy when sewing half square triangles. I do a reasonable amount of quilting and I actually have two ideas for quilt patterns to release to my pattern shop next year, so I know I would find this tape very handy. Basically, you stick it to your machine, lined up with your needle, so that you can run your half square triangles through without have to draw a pencil line down the middle of each one. A big time saver! Now if it could press and trim them for me too, that would be awesome.

Clover Stick and Stitch Guides

I think these could be very handy when sewing deeper seams or hems than I have notches for on my machine. It can be hard to get them perfectly straight, so these magnetic seam guides would help with that. Clover sure does make sewing tools in fun colors, but I’m not sure why their cuteness adds some much money. Here’s a cheaper, but not as cute version ;) I wanted to include both in case you decide the cute factor is worth the extra money!

Ruler Grip Rings

These are little grippy stickers that you can put on the bottom of your clear rules so that they don’t slip when you’re using your rotary cutter. This is a common problem for me because my cutting table is quite tall, so I can’t put the amount of pressure on the ruler I need to to keep it from slipping. I think these little grips will make a big difference for me!

“Handmade” Sewing Project Labels

I love these cute little labels! I keep a stash of labels for my sewing projects. Applying them at the end of a project is soooo satisfying and gives it a little something extra special. I am running low on mine, though, and I don’t have any in this size/shape, so I’m excited to add these to my collection.

Elastic Threader

I’ve come close to buying one of these so many times, I’ve lost count. I think I’m just so used to doing it the safety pin way, I’m just not sure if I can change my ways. But, I also tend to twist my elastic and have to fix it almost every single time, so if this tool would help with that, I’ll be a convert. This handy tool attaches to your elastic (or drawstring, I assume), and threads it all the way through the casing. I think if you’re someone who struggles with the safety pin or deals with pain in your hands, this would be a great addition to your sewing room.

Scissors Wall Hook

Moving over to Etsy — I realized I really need a hook or two in my sewing room when I was altering Nutcracker costumes for Natalie and was hanging them on my lamp along with a few dresses I had just ironed. Of course, I wouldn’t just choose a boring hook when cute ones exist! I found this super super awesome scissors hook on Etsy! I just love it. You even get to pick from 18 colors!

Okay, confession, I just stopped writing this blog post and ordered that hook, hahaha! I picked the green color. So I guess that’s one less thing my husband has to choose from ;)

Point Turner Pressing Tool

Lastly, I really love this beautiful wooden point turning tool, also on Etsy. I usually use a chopstick to get my corners pushed out neatly, but it’s not really ideal and I actually broke one of my chopsticks off in a project recently because it’s old and the wood was splintering! I think the shape of this tool is much better and is less likely to poke right through my fabrics. Having the added purpose of a finger presser and a ruler is even better. Plus, it’s pretty!

That’s everything for now! What other ideas do you have? If you’re asking for anything special for your sewing room this year, I’d love to hear about it.

Cheers!

Nikki
